Ambrose Bierce and the Queen of Spades

Ambrose Bierce and the Queen of Spades by Oakley Hall is a murder mystery set in 1880’s San Francisco featuring the titular newspaperman with his famous wit and cynicism acting as the requisite detective. As far as thrilling mystery is concerned, this is lackluster and plodding at best. However, the historic flourishes detailing the politics, corruption, and sex trade of the time manage to keep it an engaging and interesting novel.
