The Ice Beneath You

The Ice Beneath You by Christian Bauman is a work of fiction, but it deals with a man coming home after serving in the army on foreign soil – an occurrence that is far from fictional. Bauman skillfully uses a light touch, never being too overt or heavy-handed in his explorations of dislocation and the psychological burdens that soldiers returning home must carry. The way the story unfolds, those horrors witnessed while in country aren’t revealed until deep into the novel, which provides a shocking conclusion – though there is also understanding and hope.
