Tex by S.E. Hinton is another of the author’s excellent Young Adult novels that honestly and accurately portrays the temptations, pitfalls, and emotions that the teenage years are rife with. Unlike today’s trend in YA fiction to throw vampires, witches, werewolves, and dystopian futures into the mix, Tex is grounded in the realities of struggling with first love, drugs, poverty, a broken home, prison, and the pull to escape from a small town into something better. Hinton expertly navigates through the murky waters of teenage angst and fills her story with interesting and authentic characters. While it may feel a bit dated to today’s readers, it’s still accessible and worth the read.
