A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers is an aching examination of one man’s ambition and familial obligations. This is a sly, self-aware, and self-effacing memoir of sorts that manages to somehow make light of tragedy while still wringing genuine emotion from the heartache. The prose is brutally honest, but thanks to the wry wit and singular talent of Eggers, it’s also often hilarious, touching, insightful, and, yes, staggeringly heartbreaking. There is nothing rote or conventional about this outstanding tome.
