Storm Front by Jim Butcher is a fun, funny book infused with wit, action, and originality. Given my usual apathy for magic and fantasy fiction, it’s also a book I never expected to like. Harry Dresden is a bona fide practicing wizard in present-day Chicago who has hung out a shingle for himself and offered his services at a reasonable rate. The results are a fantastic mash-up of hard-boiled detective fiction with magic that is thoroughly satisfying and evocative of Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe – except this one has spells, potions, demons, and vampires. As the protagonist, wizard-cum-detective Harry Dresden is funny, sarcastic, witty, cranky, caustic, and completely perfectly likeable. Butcher is onto something special here, and I can’t wait to read some more from the Dresden Files series.
