The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving

The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving by Jonathan Evison is a slyly told and perfectly paced tale filled with memorable characters who wear their flaws openly, though are often ignorant to them. Evison carefully metes out the details of the looming tragedy that has left his protagonist adrift in his current state of feeling untethered from the world at large as he struggles to pay bills, bickers with his neighbors, and tries to rekindle a relationship that has been long dead. What begins as just another job—caring for a young man with a degenerative disease—becomes a connection to the world for both of them, and a hopeful path toward healing and redemption. It’s no easy feat, but this book manages to be profanely hilarious and profoundly touching with just a turn of the page.
